AMERICAN HISTORY 2
Are you reading this inside your home? Is it dark outside? Are you using a light in your room? We use many kinds and sizes of light bulbs in our life everyday. Have you heard of Thomas Edison? He was a great American inventor. On January 27, 1880, he received a patent for an ‘Electric Lamp’. This was the first commercial light bulb. Before this, light bulbs lasted only a few hours. This meant almost no one used them. His new light bulb could last 50-60 days- this made it practical and very popular.
Edison wanted to be a commercially successful inventor and he was. He received over 1000 patents- the first when he was only 21 years old. Edison is known for inventing the phonograph (the first record player) and the motion picture camera (the first movie camera). One of his famous sayings is ‘Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration’. He started 14 companies- one of which became General Electric- now one of the biggest companies in the world.
Remember Thomas Edison every time you see a light bulb!
