日本のホストファミリー募集

エイミーチェンバレン奨学金生でジョージア州に留学中の東根芽生さんより現地レポートが届きました!

Hello everyone. I`m Mei Higashine. Today I would like to report four things of school life in America. One-day schedule, class, friend, and event.

1. One-day schedule
I get up at six every morning, and I prepare to go to school. I mainly eat cereal as breakfast. When I have no time, I eat at cafeteria at school.
I leave home at 6:56 a.m. and I arrive at school at 7:05 a.m.by school bus. Then, I have free time until classes begin. (I often talk with my friends.)
The first class starts at 7:45 a.m. I take morning classes from the first period to the fifth period. At our school, lunch time is divided into three times. My lunch time is the second time, so I always have lunch in the middle of fifth period. After lunch, I take from the fifth period to the seventh period. School finish at 2:45 p.m. After school I go to the club activity or go home.
I think the schedule is similar to Japan’s. I can enjoy spending enough time after school, because the school starts and finishes earlier than Japan. I usually go to the club activity and do my homework after school.

2. Classes /Difference between American classes and Japanese classes
We don`t use textbooks in class. Basically, teachers and students use slides and handouts. we use PC occasionally. Actually, I`m not good at using PC, so I don`t like use it in class.
The most different things are how to make classes. There is no quiet time in the class, everyone speaks. It is a good manner to listen quietly in the class in Japan, but it is not a good behavior in America. Since it is normal to speak up an opinion, it is always noisy in the class. At first, I could not talk, just listening to everyone's opinion. Now I am asking a question to the teacher and friends, I try to talk actively in the class. I will do my best to talk more opinions.
Homework, quizzes, handouts and behavior during the class are reflected to the grades. Test is not difficult because it’s multiple choice questions. However, I am a bit struggling in literature now.

3. Friends
To make friends, it is important to talk anyway. You may have images that Americans are friendly, and everyone talks to you, but that is not always true. Nobody talks to me, and no one knows that I am an international student. So, I have to talk to people from myself. A Snapchat app was useful for making friends. Since it is an application everyone uses in America, it becomes a chance for making friends. Also, when you join club, you can make friends with people who do not meet in other classes. I belong to the swimming club that enable me to make senior friends.

4. Event
There was homecoming in September. I dressed up and danced at my school gymnasium with my friends. In October there was Halloween, I painted my face and went to school. Then a girl who meet in the corridor at school praised my paint and became my friend. I think that we should join the event as possible as we can. Because it will be an opportunity to make more friends.

Here’s four things of the American school life. Three months have passed since I came here. I want to enjoy limited time.
